Abstract

The paper examines the role of visual elements, such as typography and illustrations, as integral parts of a book, specifically focusing on Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass. Although Whitman kept the same title throughout the seven different editions of his poetry collection published in his lifetime, the identity of his book changed, not only in its poetic content, but also in its visual aspects, starting from the covers and the author’s photographs on the frontispiece to the typography and the typefaces, the diverse vignettes and illustrations. Special attention is dedicated to the third edition of the Leaves, published in 1860, whose overall design is specifically tied to the novelties introduced in the content, but also to the broader historical context in which the book was made. The second part of the paper considers an edition of Whitman’s Leaves translated into Serbian. This translation by Ivan V. Lalić was first published in 1974 accompanied by illustrations and vignettes by Serbian artist Radomir Reljić. The idiosyncrasy of Reljić’s drawings demonstrates that illustrations in a particular literary work can serve as a kind of interpretation, combining the motifs from the illustrated poems with those characteristic of the illustrator’s artistic expression.
