Abstract

The paper focuses on Walt Whitman’s collection of autobiographic essays Specimen Days in relation to his poetry. Comparing and contrasting pecific poems and essays we can note significant similarities in terms of style and themes. Whitman’s prose displays recognizable stylistic features characteristic of his poetry, such as repetition, parallelism, and cataloguing. When it comes to themes, particularly interesting is the comparison of Whitman’s prose and poetic representations of the Civil War. Apart from this, Specimen Days offers an invaluable insight into Whitman’s poetic principles, through the discussion of the structure and organization of the book. On the basis of this analysis we come to the conclusion that Whitman’s prose is not only valuable in itself, but should be considered an important complementary material for studying his poetry.
