Abstract

The paper is looking into rock ’n’ roll as a countercultural phenomenon by considering the works of two American rock poets, Bob Dylan and Sixto Rodriguez, and their relation to the social context which made them champions of anti-establishment protests. Rock music, defined by its refusal to fit into the social conventions, came to the fore in the 1960s, the age of great global crises, nuclear threats, antiwar protests and civil rights and feminist movements. This is the time when Bob Dylan appeared on stage and changed the history of rock by enriching it with elements of folk music and making it more topical. Sixto Rodriguez embraced the same attitude towards the current state of affairs in the society, leveling harsh criticism at the American establishment. Although, unlike Dylan, he never achieved any success at home, Rodriguez became famous internationally, becoming the leading figure of the anti-apartheid protests in South Africa. The two musicians exemplify the impact which artists from the margin can exert in struggles to defy the dominant center.
